AMTC Faculty and Staff

Ken Russell Ken Russell is the Director of Mine Technology. Mr. Russell has over 29 years at Jim Walter Resources as the Director of Safety and the Captain of the Mine Rescue Team. He has a BS from Birmingham Southern. Russell is married to Eunice Campbell and has 3 grown children: Adam, Josh and Maegan.

Stefanie Whitson

Stefanie Whitson is the recruiter/career transitions advisor for the mining department. Prior to joining Bevill State in October 2007, Whitson worked at the Tennessee Valley Authority nuclear plant in Athens, AL. There, she served as human resources director for numerous craftsmen ranging from electricians to operators. Before that, she spent three years working in the financial/sales industry. Whitson received a Bachelorís degree in Finance from the University of Alabama in 2003.

Josh Madison

Josh Madison is the E-Learner for the Alabama Mining Training Consortium (AMTC) at Bevill State. He has a Bachelorís degree in Journalism from Troy State University and a Masterís degree in Computer Science from Regis University. Josh joined the AMTC team in late 2007. He is responsible for training, implementing, and maintaining all new technologies associated with the Mine Technology program. Prior to the AMTC program, Josh worked for the Computer Services department at Bevill State for nine years.

Gerry Kimes

Gerry Kimes is the newest addition to the mine training instructional staff. Mr. Kimes obtained his Bachelor's degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 1968, He finished his Master's degree in 1973 from the University of Montevallo. Gerry taught music for seven years at Homewood Junior High/Middle School from 1968-1975. From 1975-2000 he was a safety instructor, inspector and supervisor with Jim Walter Resources. Just before joining the AMTC team in late 2007 Kimes was a safety, training and mine rescue private consultant. Gerry continues to wear many hats as a trainer in the classroom and on the simulator as well as overseeing the mine rescue program and its equipment.

Connie Carmichael

Connie Carmichael is the secretary for the Mine Technology Department at Bevill State. Carmichael began her career in mining in 1987 with the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), a federal agency that inspects mine sites for safety issues. She retired with MSHA in 2007 and began her career here at Bevill State.

Ronnie McCarty

Ronnie McCarty is an instructor in the Mine Technology Department at Bevill State Community College. He has a Batchelor's degree in Physical Education from UAB and has coached high school and junior high football for the last 20 years. Ronnie worked for Jim Walter Resources in the safety department as an inspector and later as a section supervisor for Alabama By-Products Company. He has been a mining instructor at Bevill State for 28 years.

Jeff Lollar

Jeff Lollar is an instructor in the Mine Technology Department at Bevill State Community College. He as an Associate's degree from Bevill State. Jeff began work for Vulcan Materials Company in June of 1996 as a general laborer/equipment operator. He later became an electrician for VMC. Jeff began working as an instructor in the mining department in 2005.
