January 15, 2013

Community theatre returning to Bevill State-Hamilton
Open auditions slated for Jan. 17 & 19

Bevill State Community College’s Continuing Education Department in Hamilton has combined forces with Self Express Productions to bring community theater back to the college campus.

The upcoming theatre event is set for March 1-3 with auditions scheduled for Jan. 17 and 19. Auditions will be held in the Hamilton Bevill Business and Community Center on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 6-9 p.m. with the second round of auditions set for Saturday, Jan. 19, from 1-4 p.m.

No prior experience or preparation is necessary to try out! Material from the script will be provided for participants to use in the auditions. Numerous roles for people (ages 16-80) of all levels of experience or even no experience are available.

Performers will be vying for a spot in the production known as “Mama Won’t Fly.’’ Jessie Jones, Jamie Wooten, and Nicholas Hope wrote the script. These are the same playwrights who penned “The Red Velvet Cake Wars’’ and “Rex’s Exes,’’ both of which have been performed by Self Express at the Pastime Theater in Winfield, AL.

“This will be a really fun production, so I encourage as many who have an interest to come to the college and read for a part. This production is a humorous one, which will draw the audience into the tale for an unexpected end.’’ said Self Express producer Josh Kauffman.

Mama Won't Fly
The story follows the journey of a mother and daughter as they travel from Alabama to California to attend a wedding.  They are racing against the clock because of one problem; mama won’t fly. Instead, the mother insists on taking a cross-country trip by car. Unexpectedly, the bride-to-be shows up as one of the passengers for the trip.

“We are pleased to once again offer theatre opportunities to our community,” said Susan Burrow, BSCC Hamilton Campus Dean.  “Providing arts and cultural experiences enhances the lives of our students and community. We hope this program continues to grow and provide that much needed experience for the citizens of our areas.”
