LADY BEARS SPLIT TWO HOME GAMES
02-02-2009

The Bevill State Lady Bears split two closely contested games this past week earning their third ACCC win of the season with a win over Wallace State-Hanceville but fell in overtime to Lawson earlier in the week.

Lawson State 52 Bevill State 48 (OT)

The Lady Cougars of Lawson State turned in a tremendous defensive performance on their way to an overtime victory Jan. 26 in Fayette. Bevill State held an early 15-10 lead before Lawson went on a 12- 3 run to close out the first half.

The second half would produce a highly contested 20 minutes as the lead would change hands several times before being knotted at 41-41 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, a few costly turnovers by the Lady Bears proved to be the difference as Lawson converted a pair of late free throws to secure the victory.

Turnovers and poor shooting from the field would contribute to the loss for Bevill State. The Bears finished the game committing 22 turnovers and shooting 2-for-17 from the arc on the night.

Leading Scorer for Bevill State was Scavonne Seymore who finished the game with 13 points while going 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Also in double figures was Tyffani Fenwick who had 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting.

Lawson was led by 5’7” guard Cherelle James who finished with 17 points converting 6 of 6 attempts from the free throw line. Posting a double-double in the win was Tearra Henderson who chipped in 10 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

The loss drops the Lady Bears to 12-9 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Bevill State 52 Wallace-Hanceville 50

The Lady Bears continued their home stand Thurs., Jan. 29 at home against Wallace. Bevill State was able to overcome a 7 point halftime deficit to claim a much needed conference win.

For Bevill State the night would be a tale of two halves as Wallace was able to control much of the first half leading by as much as 10 points. The Lions would take a 33- 26 lead into the locker room.

Halftime adjustments made by Coach Richardson would prove to be beneficial in the Lady Bears second half turnaround. Jasmine Brooks was moved from shooting guard to point for the entire second half due largely to questionable shot selection and excessive turnovers by Bevill State in the first half.

The adjustments paid off as the Lady Bears went on a 12-0 run over the first five minutes of the second half. Over the course of the second half Bevill State would outscore Wallace 27-18 to claim the victory.
