BSCC Fayette Baseball starting off strong
02-09-2009

The season has started off well for the Bears (6-2) with wins over Alabama Southern, Enterprise-Ozark, Faulkner State, and Bishop State.  After wins to Alabama Southern and Enterprise and a loss to East Central, the Bevill State baseball team improved to a 4-2 record sweeping Faulkner State 3-0 and 2-1 on Fri., Feb. 06.

Playing well in the win was Kyle Dees, securing his second win of the season throwing five innings and allowing no runs on six hits.  He struck out five and walked three.  Slamming the door in the end was T.J. Flowers, who earned the save, throwing two innings, allowing no runs on one hit, and striking out three.

Contributing on offense was Landon Wilson, who led the offense in game one going 2-4, and Drake Warr, who hit his first collegiate homerun in the 6th inning, giving the Bears a 3-0 lead.  Scott Deason had the game winning RBI.

Nick Myers got his second win of the season in game two.  He gave up one run on five hits, struck out three and walked two.  Myers got the complete game win on 86 pitches.  Offensively, Cody Garrison and Hunter Gregory both had multi-hit games.  Scott Deason had the game winning RBI.

"We pitched well and played solid defense," said Coach May about the wins.  "Kyle got in some trouble but made big pitches when it mattered the most.  We turned an inning ending double play in the sixth inning of the second game to preserve the 2-1 lead.  I thought it was the play of the day."

Ending the weekend in the South part of the state, the Bevill State Bears won its fourth game in a row against Bishop State on Sun., Feb. 8.

The Bears swept Bishop 19-4 and 12-1.  Several players has multiple hits with Hunter Gregory, Kyle Dees, Trey George, and Drake Warr leading the Bears with three hits each and Scott Deason and Landon Wilson capturing two. George and Collins each hit a homerun in the victory. In game two, Gregory, Deason, Collins, and Garrison had two hits apiece for the Bears.

T.J. Flowers got the win in the first game, going 2 1/3 innings giving up no runs on one hit, one strike-out and one walk. In the second game for Bevill State, Taylor Gregory got his first collegiate win going 3 2/3 innings giving up one run on four hits, walking three and striking out seven.

"We still have a great deal to work on, "said BSCC head coach Joey May. "When you drive five hours on a bus, then put up 31 runs in 10 innings, we feel good about our offensive performance."

The Bears will play their first home game on Sat., Feb. 14 at 12:00 noon against Northeast Mississippi.
