Bears End Losing Streak in Impressive Fashion
02-09-2009

Bevill State ended a five game losing streak against Gadsden on Thurs., Feb. 5, by the score of 79-62. This was the second meeting of the season between the two teams with Bevill State claiming a hard fought 77-74 win in Gadsden on Jan. 8. Since the first meeting, the two teams had gone in opposite directions with Bevill State dropping five in a row and Gadsden winning their last 5-of-8 on the season.

The Cardinals got off to a good start with Bobby Smith hitting a three from the corner in the game's opening moments. Over the next 12 minutes Bevill State would go on a 24-7 run highlighted by easy buckets and cold shooting by Gadsden. The Bears would close out the first half with a high energy effort to take a 45-25 lead in the locker room.

In the second half, Gadsden came out with a sense of urgency outscoring Bevill State 25-12 and cutting a 20 halftime lead to seven with just over 8:00 minutes to play. At this point, the Bears began exploiting the post defense of the Cardinals which had proved successful in the first half. An area the Bears knew they must be successful to have a chance to win was rebounding. The Bears outrebounded Gadsden 49-41 including claiming 13 offensive rebounds.

Having a career night in scoring and rebounding was Devin West who finished with 18 points and 21 rebounds on the night. Also scoring in double figures was Lee Riley with 14 points and Bo Amusa contributing 13 points in the win. Giving a spark in the paint, was 6-10 center Darnell Taylor who had nine points and six rebounds before going to the bench with foul trouble.

"The guys executed the game plan to perfection. We played with a great deal of energy on both sides of the floor. This is how we must play the rest of the way to give ourselves a chance to win." BSCC Head Coach Josh Gulsby commented.

The win improved the Bears record to 11-10 overall and 3-6 in conference.
