Bevill State Baseball Continues to Roll

Coach Joey May knew this team could be good. The team is continuing to play well and win close games. The Bear's Baseball team ended the week with a 12-3 record, which is the best start in school history. The Bears split with Itawamba Community College earlier in the week but came back exceptionally strong to sweep a three game series at Lawson over the weekend.
Bevill State 7, 6  Itawamba 11, 5
The Bears split a double-header with Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Miss. on Feb. 16. In game one, the Bears started off strong, but a grand slam in the top of the seventh gave the Indians the win.
Pitching for the Bears, Kyle Dees went six innings giving up four hits, four runs, one stike-out, and three walks. T.J. Flowers gave up one hit, three runs, and walked five.
Offensively, the Bears had several players who had multiple hits in the game. Hunter Collins went 3-4, hitting his fourth homerun of the season. Other contributors were Wes Clay who went 2-for-3, and Scott Deason, who was 4-for-5..
In game two, the Bears won 6-5. An RBI off the bat of Trey George capped a four-run rally in the top of the seventh to give the Bears the win.
Larry Thompson earned his first collegiate victory on the mound in relief, while Scott Deason earned the save. Garrett McHenry pitched well in a no-decision, allowing three runs on five hits, with eight strike-outs in five innings of work.
Bevill State 11 Lawson State 10 (12 Innings)
The game was highly contested until Bevill State went ahead 7-4 in the sixth inning and did not look back.
The winning pitcher was Forrest Holifield going 1 1/3 innings giving up one run on two hits, one walk and one strike-out.  Scott Deason recorded the save for the Bears pitching 2/3 of an inning with zero runs and hits. Nick Meyers went six innings- giving up seven runs on eight hits with two strike-outs and five walks.  TJ Flowers went four innings giving up two runs on four hits, one strike-out and one walk. 
At the plate for the Bears, Scott Deason went 2-3 on the day. He was hit by a pitch, had a sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt. Also contributing in the win, Hunger Gregory was 3-for-5, Landon Wilson 2-6 and Cody Garrison 2-7. The game winning RBI came in the 12th inning by Todd Cantrell.
"We made several errors in the game but thankfully did just enough to get the win. I am proud however, that the guys did not give up and had a strong comeback to win the game."

Bevill State 12, 5 Lawson State 1, 2
On Sat., Feb. 21, the Bears and Cougars concluded their three game series with a double header in Birmingham. Turning in an impressive performance on the mound was Kyle Dees who pitched seven innings to record the win. Dees allowing one run on seven hits and struck out four while only walking two.
At the plate, Hunter Collins hit his fifth home run of the season. Collins scored two runs in the win. Scott Deason was 2-for-5 at the plate, which included the game winning RBI for the Bears.
In the second game of the day, Garrett McHenry pitched seven innings giving up two runs on seven hits. McHenry struck out eight while walking three.
At the plate, Landon Wilson went 2-for-2, including knocking in the go ahead run for the Bears. Also contributing with his bat was Drake Warr who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Coach Joey May commented after the double-header, "I thought we played pretty well for conference games on the road. We were able to score 28 runs in 3 games, so our run production is good. I feel good about starting 3-0 in conference and 12-3 overall."
