BEARS CLAIM BACK TO BACK WINS
02-26-2009

The Bevill State Men's Basketball finished the week in strong fashion with wins on Thurs., Feb. 19, and Sat., Feb. 21. The Bears defeated Bevill-Jasper 84-65 on Thursday night in the final home game on the regular season. Two days later, Bevill State went on the road and defeated Marion Military institute by a score of 91-80. Marion was ranked third place in the conference entering the game.

The game on Thursday night marked sophomore night for the Bears. Five sophomores were honored prior to game. Bevill-Fayette opened the game in strong fashion claiming an 8-0 lead in the early moments. The Bears would never trail as they were able to extend the lead to 51-34 going into halftime.  The lead remained in double figures throughout much of the second half when Bevill-Jasper was able to close the gap to nine points with just under three minutes to play. Bevill-Fayette would close the game on 10-0 run capped off by a thunderous dunk by Bo Amusa to seal the victory.

Bevill-Fayette controlled the boards much of the night holding a 48-36 advantage on the boards. The Bears held Bevill-Jasper to 35 percent shooting on the night.

Coach Josh Gulsby commented, "We were in need of a win. The team was able to come together and get it done tonight. I wanted to send these sophomores out on a good note. We need to carry some momentum into the last three games of the season."

Leading scorers for Bevill-Fayette included Bo Amusa who had 21 points. Lamarcus Bell had 19 points on 3-of-6 shooting behind the arc, and sophomore Joe Lastrape contributed 15 points in the win.

After a short turnaround, the Bears went on the road Saturday to face Marion Military Institute in a pivotal conference game. The Tigers entered the game with a 7-6 conference record and holding the third place spot in the North Division. The first half was highly contested as neither team was able to take control of the game. The largest lead was five points and the lead changed hands several times. A missed shot by Bevill State at the buzzer gave Marion a 44-42 lead going into halftime.

The Bears were able to turn up the intensity on defense in second half to take control of the game. Bevill State went on a 33-13 run in the first 12 minutes of the second half to take a 75-57 lead. Key free throw shooting down the stretch enabled the Bears to hold on for the win.

For the Bears, Bo Amusa had 20 points and 12 rebounds in the game. Lamarcus Bell recorded his second straight game in double figures with 17 points on 4-for-8 shooting from three-point range. Also in double figures was Darrell Hicks with 14 points and Anthony Sims with 10 points on the night.

Coach Josh Gulsby spoke on the team's performance. "The performance tonight ranks up there with our best on the season. Marion is a tough place to go in and get a win. They have a good team and they are well coached. The intensity this week in practice has been incredible. All the credit goes to the players for this win."

The two wins improve the Bears record to 13-13 overall and 5-9 in conference play. Bevill State ends the regular season this week with a trip to Lawson State on Monday, Feb. 23 and a Thursday night game at Wallace-Hanceville on the 26.
