  Lincoln exhibit opens Thursday
06-11-2009

For three weeks in June, Bevill State Community College's Nicholson Library will be the proud host of a national exhibition, “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times.”

The Nicholson Library is one of 40 sites nationwide — the only stop in Alabama — to host the Lincoln exhibition. Two centuries after Lincoln's birth in 1809, he is one of the most revered figures in our nation's history. Lincoln's life, accomplishments and his legacy are the subjects of the new traveling panel exhibition to be displayed at the Nicholson Library on the Jasper campus.

“Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, A Man for All Times” explores how Lincoln left behind a legacy for all Americans to follow.

The exhibition was created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and funded through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibit will be on display June 4-25.

According to the Gilder Lehrman Institute, the exhibition tells the story of how Lincoln — a self-educated lawyer with no administrative experience — guided a divided nation through the crises of slavery and the Civil War. The exhibition makes extensive use of Lincoln's own words to encourage a deeper understanding of his principles and his legacy. Drawing on documents, broadsides and ephemera from the Gilder Lehrman Collection, the six panels examine the legacy of slavery and emancipation, and Lincoln's commitment to every American's "right to rise."

"We are pleased to have been selected as a site for this exhibition," said Bevill State President Anne McNutt. "Lincoln's achievements as president are well-known, but knowledge about our most famous president is dominated by a set of iconic images. Through reproductions of documents, photographs and posters, the exhibition invites visitors to learn about the challenges Lincoln faced and his accomplishments."

Tyrone Webb, the library director at Bevill State, is thrilled to have the traveling Lincoln exhibit come the area.

“We are all very excited to have this exhibit to show the public,” Webb said. “We hope that presenting Lincoln’s own words in speeches, letters and proclamations will encourage a deeper understanding about the life and accomplishments of our 16th president.”

The exhibition will be open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m until 5 p.m, the schedule is as follows:

•Thursday, June 4, exhibition officially opens to the public at 10 a.m. The “Abraham Abridged,” an exhibition of books and other materials from the Nicholson Library on Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War, will be available for viewing.
