BSCC volleyball evens record with two road victories
09-21-2009

The Bevill State volleyball team evened their season record at 4-4 after grabbing a pair of road victories last week.

The Lady Bears traveled to Boaz for a conference game Tuesday with Snead State, trailed early, but battled back to leave with a hard-fought 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 victory over the Parsons.

The squad followed that win with a dominating road victory over Wallace State-Selma on Thursday, cruising to a 25-19, 25-7, 25-20 victory.

Meagan Box and Haley Wiggins, both natives of Addison, led the way in kills in the win over Snead State that improved BSCC’s conference record to 1-2. Both recorded 13, while LaShay Henke was next with five kills.

Sophomore setter Lauren Beason led the way with 26 assists, while Box led the way at the net with seven total blocks.

“We showed a lot of guts against Snead,” head coach Sandra Holliman said. “We got down early on the road, but we didn’t roll over. The team fought back and played an excellent match after dropping the first set.”

The offense was spread out in the win over Wallace-Selma, with Kathryn Colston leading the way in kills with eight, followed by Box with seven and Wiggins with five.

Taylor Jones was the leader in assists with 18, with Box tops in blocks again with four total blocks.

“I thought we played pretty good all-around volleyball against Wallace State,” Holliman said. “We reduced our errors down, played within ourselves, and did a good job attacking from different points on the floor.”

Bevill State traveled to conference leader Wallace State-Hanceville on Tuesday night. The Lady Bears’ next home game is Wednesday in a non-conference match with Southern Union at 6 p.m.
