  Lady Bears knock off Jeff Davis in straight sets

A solid effort on offense and defense led the Bevill State volleyball team to an easy victory at home over Jefferson Davis Community College on Tuesday, winning in straight sets 25-19, 25-14, 25-17.

 

The win improved the Lady Bears to 8-11 overall after taking one of four matches against strong competition at the Gulf Coast (Fla.) Communit College tournament over the weekend. The squad stands at 1-3 in Alabama Community College Conference play.

 

Meagan Box led the offense against Jeff Davis with 10 kills, and Haley Wiggins was right behind with nine. LaShay Henke finished with seven.

 

Lauren Beason was the leader in assists with 28, while Danielle Brown led the defense with 36 digs. Box and Henke were the leaders at the net with three total blocks apiece.

 

BSCC traveled to the Florida panhandle over the weekend to face some of the best volleyball programs in the nation, coming away with one win in four matches at Gulf Coast.

 

The Lady Bears hung tough with Pensacola Junior College before falling 17-25, 17-25, 23-25. Kathryn Colston was tops for the offense with six kills, while Box and Wiggins finished with four apiece.

 

Kaci Ritchie had a big game defensively at the net, totaling six total blocks, and Beason finished with three total blocks and also totaled 13 assists.

 

The team turned it around in their second match, taking a straight sets win over St. John’s River Community College, 25-14, 25-18, 25-18.

 

Wiggins was the offensive leader with 10 kills, and Ritchie finished with six. Beason totaled 24 assists.

 

Box was the defensive leader with five total blocks, and Henke was right behind with four.

 

The Lady Bears ran into a buzzsaw when they faced Florida Community College at Jacksonville, the 14th-ranked volleyball team in the nation, falling 9-25, 16-25, 10-25. Box was the offensive leader with five kills, while Beason totaled eight assists.

 

Box was tops on defense as well with four total blocks.

 

In their final match of the tournament, the Lady Bears jumped on top early but could not hang on, falling to host Gulf Coast 25-18, 16-25, 15-25, 18-25.

 

Wiggins totaled eight kills to lead the offense, while Box finished with seven and Henke with six.

 

Beason was the leader in assists with 25, and Brown finished with 25 digs to lead the back-line defense.

 

Box had another big game at the net with six total blocks, and Henke finished with four total blocks.

 

The Lady Bears will host Gadsden State in a conference matchup on Monday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m.
