Bevill State Community College and Athens State University continue their partnership to provide access to upper level teacher education courses for residents in rural West-Alabama. Students interested in a teaching career may take courses toward their bachelor's degree in education while also enrolled in core classes such as English, Math, and History at Bevill State. "The partnership between Athens State and Bevill is significant because it allows students to continue their path towards a bachelor's degree," said Dr. Patricia Sims, dean of the College of Education at Athens State University. "We want to make certain students understand that this effort ensures that they have the opportunity to reach their goals. Athens and Bevill State are both committed to ensuring that students have access to high quality, low-cost education."
The program, which was created in 2011, allows for five common education foundation courses to be taught at Bevill State's Jasper Campus. The blended course format meets just three times a semester on site and the student completes other coursework in an online environment. This enrollment model allows for a quicker progression and makes it easier for them to advance in their education. This was true for Rachel Chapman a student in the program. She explained, "I loved being able to take education courses offered by Athens State on the Bevill campus. It allowed me to work toward my four-year degree in familiar, convenient surroundings and eased my transition from one school to the other."
The courses are offered on a rotational basis during the academic year so that students can enroll in courses at both institutions. During the Fall 2014 semester, students are eligible to enroll in ED 301 - Intro to Teaching, which is only available online, and SE 301 - Survey of Exceptional Learners.
"Bevill State is proud of our partnership with Athens State because it will open the door for many to pursue their dream to teach. Quality instruction, a commitment to excellence, and affordable tuition rates make this program an obvious choice for future teachers," said Bevill State Interim President Dr. Tom Huebner.
Athens State's Teacher Education Program is approved by the Alabama State Department of Education and accredited by the National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education. The program has established partnerships with area high schools for local field experience opportunities for students.
To enroll in this program, students must apply for admissions to Athens State University and enroll in courses through an academic advisor. For questions regarding the program, please contact Dr. Russell Howton at 800-648-3271 ext. 5310.
